What do you do? by Duchess Willow de Wisp The Crown has picked a new Baron or Baroness or both. Some of you are happy. Some of you are mad and some of you are confused. Up until now nothing has been the same as the many democratic elections you have seen, but now it is different. When we change officers in the democratic system we have the chance for new ideas and plans to be initiated. It is the same here. Every set of Baronial leaders have a set of viewpoints and plans that they are trying to put into place. Every Baronial leader has different solutions to problems. If you have been exceptionally clever you talked to all the candidates as to what you would like to see happen in your group, but if you are like most of us you talked to your favorite candidate and no one else. Do not give up hope. There is still time, but not much. Within the next couple of months your new Baronial candidate will be setting up his or hers government and plotting his or hers strategies. Here are some things you can do to influence the path of your group. Offer your help. Remember there will be many people attempting to further their social standing and many people just happy for their friend so there may not be any need for help in the Baronial ceremony. The new Baronial leader will soon understand he or she needs everyone to run the Barony and will remember your offer. Whatever you think of the individual keep your lines of communication open! Try to create a clear vision of what you would like to see in your group. For example, your old Baron wasn't into making fancy presentations to the Crown, but you have seen other groups do it and you think it would be fun to do it. Write up a wish list. Please no negative comments about past Baronial leaders, but it is good to mention things pass Baronial leaders did well. Send this to the new Baronial candidate/s, but also share it with the people close to them. We are all limited by where we get information and we are most likely to get information from people we feel comfortable with. Of course, this is a very period form of politics. You might also start open discussions, but be careful this can sometimes bring intense conflict, which confuses everything. Try to promote some guidelines. One such guideline should be that all people in a group should be able to do things to express themselves, for example Bardic or light fighting or archery or persona playing. The Baronial position needs to be fair and give all members of the community chances to play. The Baronial leader cannot give more resources to his/her friends or more to the establish players. They have to share the resources with fringe players and new people. That is how we get our new generations. Make your expectations of a Good Baron/ess clear. Most people will try to live up to expectations if they are given to them when they start something. Scientific research show people get angry if they get new expectations later and often refuse to live up to them. The more people who voice general agreement on expectations the more likely leaders now and tomorrow will honor them. By the way these concepts apply to Crowns, officers, peers, any new leader.
