I have done a limited amount of editing. Messages having to do with separate topics were sometimes split into different files and sometimes extraneous information was removed. For instance, the message IDs were removed to save space and remove clutter.

1: that's "period epoxy" not duct tape.
2: duck is spelled differently, we have it on tape.

Sell them at cost somewhere so people who want one can have one.
We might carry our own to the privvy, tucked in our beltpouches,
and we'd only need a hook over the door in order to deal with the
need of the moment.

Strange this notion hasn't occurred to other manufacturers...
make them in different shapes, and offer limited runs in special
shapes providing a proper mold is provided by the buyer
in the shape desired. Yes, some shapes will be more popular
than others, all things being subject to corrupt thought, but
the event costs can include a special run in a unique shape,
say of a crown or shield or other logo, not also sold at the
event, so the THIEVES can be detected and cast out! Do that
once, and parental anti-larceny lectures will be taught more
forcefully.
This ought to sell like hotcakes around holloween time, and
for large camping events across the nation.

Semi-period way to deal with it!
Mount a tin box with a locked lid on top (if you have someone
industrious enough, make a period lock).
Make holes large enough to shed light, but not large enough for
someone to steal the chem-light.
Put oiled paper over the holes inside (so people can't see the
chem light, it has to be "clear" enough to allow light to come out).
And mount it to the walls of the privy. I am sure you might be
able to find a commercial lock that looks period?

Here in New York (East Kingdom) we have an event in Concordia of the Snows
(Albany Area) that still uses Outhouses. Non-Permanent variety. There is
one main permanent structure that has stalls built over a trench. Since this
is permanant it is pumped out every so often, but limed every day. There is;
however, mobile six stall unit they move around the site digging a deep hole
wherever it is set. Again, it is limed everyday and then backfilled when out
of use; therefore, it is legal to bury waste. Animals do their business in
the woods all the time and there's is used as fertlizer. Why can't we do
similar as long as we take appropriate measures i.e burying and liming?
With Liming, there is little stink except from those that miss the latrine.

In North Texas I have had similar cost for handicap units ($75).. the
problem with renting _all_ handicap units is simple, sanitation companies
don't keep that many on hand. In fact I have had a problem as an event
steward once in which the sanitation company only kept one on hand and the
week it was supposed to come to my event, heavy rains stranded it at a
location and the sanitation companies truck couldn't get to it. Thankfully
there were accessible restrooms on the site so though it was very very
inconvenient for my step daughter and others who attended the event with
needs for such things, it was far from impossible. Reasonable accommodation
for facilities was still provided.
This is an important point. "Equal access" does not correspond to "exact
same access" the words we most commonly need to consider are "reasonable
accommodation" This statement is a byword of ADA inspections on state and
federal properties and is taken from the text of the ADA. Reasonable
accommodation is looked at before undue hardships and costs (which are not
identical items) are even considered for evaluation.
I have been traveling around this kingdom for 11 years now with a
handicapped child who has used both a manual chair and a power chair. we go
to Camp Cimarron regularly and Debbie often goes with us. I have myself in
the past had severe back problems, that before surgery, greatly limited my
mobility. We have traveled to many of these same sites. I have rarely found
the sites completely inaccessible and never found the people running the SCA
events to be unwilling to make every effort to provide me or my daughter
with "reasonable accommodation" Especially since we are talking about going
_camping._
Please let us remember that we are staying in tents (both period and modern)
most of which are not terribly accessible (that lip across the bottom where
the door zips shut on a nylon tent is a real pain) We show up and arrange
for a tent to be put up and find ways of making it accessible to us because
we _want_ to be at that event. We find ways to participate in activities
instead of expecting ways to be provided to us.

You aren't alone in such 'weird' thoughts. Actually, several years back when
the Northern Region was going to be hosting Their Majesties at an event
(Queen's Champion), I and some others were working on putting together a
cohesive Porta-Potty Beautification Project... if you'd like details, they
can be found here: http://zubeydah.northkeep.org/post-portapotty.htm The
initial ideas were fairly simple, and could easily be expanded upon. They
weren't actually put into use, as the site they were intended for built
beautiful permanent structures that addressed the issue.

We actually made a frame from PVC pipe and pinned muslin around the
frame to hide our private potty at Raven's Fort Defender a few years
ago. It worked great. There was still enough air flow to allow the
vents to work, but it hid it just enough to help.

At Raven's Fort we had toyed with the idea of making tri-fold painted
"flats" to go around them...but had not solved the problem of wind
load...
We did use bamboo screening once or twice and that worked pretty well...

Maybe the small push lights (they operate off AAA
batteries). Put some of the double sticky tape on the
back it should adhere to the privies. Wallmart
carries the small ones in a four pack for about $3.50.

Something to read? Ewww I don't wanna be in the porta potty long
enough to read something! LOL
When I was on sanitation duty at gulf I noticed that some of the
porta potties had those kinds of lights you are talking about. The
only thing I noted is that they must not stick to the plastic very
well because all of them were either on the floor or on the back of
the toilet seat. Seems like a good idea. I guess they either got
bumped off or they slid down.

These are not like the tap lights. Here is a link to them. My son used them
in Iraq with the military. They are great camp light because the are
almost indestructable. No bulbs to mess with and waterproof. I where one
on my belt now so my Hubby can find me at events in the evening.

Another idea is the tent light that WalMart sells. They take 4 C batteries
and last about 6 hours. They have an on/off switch. We have used them
several times at our events and they work well. They run around 8.88.
We secure them with plastic zip ties and it seams to work.
