Have you figured out how to do edible embroidery? :-) Well, I'm not Maire, but I did a blackwork and cross stitch embroidery cake for a SCAdian needleworker's wedding anniversary. I copied an Elizabethan blackwork design for the border and found a cross stitch pattern for an owl (of significance for her) for the center. It's at http://home.netcom.com/~alysk/photos-medievalcakes.html should you want to see it. So, Stefan, some of us have done edible embroidery! Would that count? --Maire Date: Wed, 28 Dec 2005 12:00:43 EST From: Devra at aol.com Subject: [Sca-cooks] Re: edible embroidery To: sca-cooks at ansteorra.org What about using licorice whips? You could do blackwork with them... Especially on a sheet of marzipan or marziplate... With gold leafing for capitals... Of course, you'd need a needle with a pretty big eye, or maybe use an awl... (Oh this is so gross) Devra, who is sorry that she even thought about it Devra Langsam www.poisonpenpress.com Date: Wed, 28 Dec 2005 17:49:30 -0600 From: "otsisto" Subject: RE: [Sca-cooks] Re: edible embroidery To: "Cooks within the SCA" You can whittle a point on the licorice. (laced a gingerbread box) If anything, you are looking at mostly couching methods. You could use celery strands as string. Fruit leather could be cloth. (saw once a fruit leather pouch filled with gem shape hard candy, 4 string licorices as drawstring). If you can make hard candy, you can make beads (though it will be a bit difficult) and jewels. Weave a cloth of string licorice (if able, cut string in half) and with needlepoint method using thin strips of fruit leather. (be warned, this can get sticky especially if you are a warm handed individual) Lyse Date: Wed, 28 Dec 2005 16:17:19 -0800 From: Susan Fox Subject: Re: [Sca-cooks] Re: edible embroidery To: Cooks within the SCA I got that really good Armenian string cheese, the kind that looks like a skein of yarn and challenged Megen Paget to do something with it. She crocheted the cheese. No joke. She's in Ft. Worth now but not playing SCA, more's the pity. Selene C. Someone knit a couple pairs of socks using "licorice whips" in several different colors to achieve some color patterns. I haven't tried it myself, since I just don't like "licorice"... -- Urtatim (that's err-tah-TEEM) the persona formerly known as Anahita Edited by Mark S. Harris edble-embrdry-msg Page 4 of 4
