I have worn a steel gorget for years. My solution (and I recommend it!)

is to have a gambeson (padded coat) made with a high padded collar that

the gorget can fasten around. This has proven to be very comfortable,

more so than the average necktie :) anyway... another alternative might

be a fighting tunic with only the neckline padded. Just be sure the

padding extends above the steel.

The gorget should either be tight enough that it moves with your

neck or loose enough that your neck can swivel inside it without rubbing

against the material.

Dog collar gorgets are almost never comfortable since they rub and

trap sweat. A better pattern is the steel gorget lined with foam. Not only

does it give better throat and C1-3 protection it also "breathes" better

and doesn't go moldy if you get it wet and leave it in a hot car trunk

for a week. Most armorers sell them, and anyone can make one (mine was my

first piece of armor ever. It isn't gorgeous, but it's not bad.)

In profile most will look sort of like this:

               -----------------------

              /            |           \

           /         ------|-----        \

           | --------/            \--------\

There will be a slight scoop for the shoulder, and a slight bulge

in back for the cervical vertebrae, and the rear will also have a slightly

steeper angle to better fit the slope of the back of the neck.
