In a recent thread there was some discussion about bucklers. This led to
discussion about "Paradoxes". Today I found an earlier reference to the
use of bucklers. In "An Historical Guide to Arms and Armor" by Stephen
Bull there shown a page from a 14th century fencing manual illustrating
the use of bucklers and broadswords. The caption said that it was one of
several illustrations and that the manuscript was South German. The book
was published by Facts on File in 1991.

The manual in question now resides in the Tower of London and has been
dated to approximately 1300. It formerly resided in the Royal Collection
in Dresden. It is in Latin with technical jargon in German. Currently
Jeffery L Singman of the Chaucerian Handbook is preparing a translation
with the support of the people at the Tower.
