For historical reference, obi were used before 1600 in Japan, but I
can't think of any of the large, gaudy ones like in the Edo period and
later.

Are those bows separate? ?This is about 1mm thick and woven to be
quite stiff like something starched, I don't think it would tie or
drape like that. ?Perhaps the separate bow is a later period idea so
you can have your obi be very flat around your waist?

In period you are generally looking at just a few pieces of fabric for
the obi--not as large nor as stiff.  Later styles tend to have very
large bows that are elaborately tied, often with supporting cords:
