He eats solid foods for the most part and the easy things are easy sure... If you have a microwave! Soooo.... Ideas? Please? I'm taking my son to Stargate's event this weekend... first camping event... by myself (meaning my lord is staying home). I'll have some assistance from Elizabeth of Shadowlands (God bless that woman!) but ya know, any advice there would be great too. -Lady Grainne Kathleen NicPadraig MacDaniel From: Benjamin Berry Date: April 16, 2009 5:50:02 PM CDT To: " Inc.Kingdom of Ansteorra - SCA" Subject: Re: [Ansteorra] Feeding toddlers at events premades like fruit slices are always good in moderation, perhaps sandwiches, perhaps not quite in period but passable. Hope this helps. A little while before they are ready to eat pull them into the sun... they will warm slightly, and are quite tasty. Lunch meats, cheese sticks, and even breakfast/cereal bars are great too. Subject: Re: [Ansteorra] Feeding toddlers at events I generally went with finger-food like grapes, strawberries, string cheese, raisins, peanut-butter crackers and so on, and then the occasional "actual" sandwich made from a wheat roll and some thinly-sliced turkey, maybe a slice of cheese as well. If I didn't want to cart along a small cooler, I'd still bring grapes (can NEVER have too many grapes...) and maybe a baggie of pre-sliced apples, and then anything that doesn't require cooling to keep safe. Let 'em snack all day long, and make sure they drink plenty of water, and they'll survive just fine. :) -Emma (mom to 9 and 4-"almost 5!" yr old girls..) If he is teething he can chew on them forever. Cherrios are always a safe bet too. My kids still love them. Rhiannon From: Rose & Chad Date: April 16, 2009 9:55:42 PM CDT To: " Inc.Kingdom of Ansteorra - SCA" Subject: Re: [Ansteorra] Feeding toddlers at events I am surprised that nobody mentioned Vienna sausages... :) They are awesome kid food at events, being a large part of what I ate as a kid, along with peanut butter and crackers, canned fruit, plus bananas and all other fruits that come with their skin on. Also, there are several different kinds of soy milk that come in packages that do not require refrigeration available al Wal-Mart. Soy milk sounds icky but it is usually flavored with vanilla and is very sweet and tasty. It also has roughly the same amount of calcium and protein than cow's milk, so it's a very good alternative for an event with no cooler or where you don't trust a cooler. Quite a few events will also have a tavern and, if not, it's a pretty-good bet than you can group with some other families for meals, making it easier on the whole. :) R the O From: Jhan Knebel Date: April 17, 2009 7:25:28 AM CDT To: "Kingdom of Ansteorra - SCA, Inc." Subject: Re: [Ansteorra] Feeding toddlers at events GO buy an old school thermos. You can still find them at Target. Fill it with boiling water. You can then submerge whatever you want to feed him in a watertight container and warm it that way. The thermos has saved me traveling with an infant. Cold water is easy to get, hot water, a little bit harder. Rixende From: Derek Brown Date: April 17, 2009 9:50:07 AM CDT To: "'Kingdom of Ansteorra - SCA, Inc.'" Subject: Re: [Ansteorra] Feeding toddlers at events Another good meat finger food is I get at the deli. At a deli counter, get 1-3 slices of the soft deli meat of your choice. Ask for a number 10 cut, which is the thickest. 1/4" I believe. At home, I cut into strips about 1/4" by 1/4". You can also cook them into a scrambled egg for breakfast. The great thing about the finger food meat is that you only have to buy what you think you are going to use....little wasted food or money. Subject: Re: [Ansteorra] Feeding toddlers at events When I went to Gulf Wars in 2008, I brought some "juice-box" type things of ultra-pasteurized milk plus some boxes of juice. I had milk and juice to drink! Let's see ... I brought pop-tarts...(okay an off brand really!) Chef Boyardee and Armour products in single-serve containers were also a good choice for me (the ones with the pull tabs since I had no can opener!) And I got single-serve packages of Spam. I had ended up bringing too much and left some for some other people though! I had to leave but apparently, the SPAM ogt snatched up right away! I feel quite brave... or stupid. Not sure which. -Lady Grainne Kathleen NicPadraig MacDaniel >>> One thing I recommend, from experience in the past with my son, take plenty of bottled water. At that age, a change in water can be a recipe for problems, from upset tummy to diahrrea. If you have a cooler, I'd go with a good supply of his favorite juices as well. As mentioned before lots of finger foods, fruits like apples and grapes, cheerios, and if I remember correctly, gerber has a line of ready to eat toddler foods that don't have to be kept cool or heated up. If you're taking a cooler, another fun treat for him is string cheese, he can tear it up while eating it, but get him a variety if he likes different flavors. Multiple sippy cups (or whatever type cup he's using now) is always a good idea, that way he'll always have a clean cup (or one to use while you're cleaning the other). Letting him snack all day and not worrying as much about scheduled meals is usually a good idea because he's in an unusual situation and likely excited and a little bit hyper. Try to stick with his normal schedule as far as naptime, bedtime, etc... You don't want it to be too different from the norm. Also Go-gurt (yoghurt in a tube) is a good idea... easier than cheese on the stomach though a little high in sugar.
